Antoine Vergote

Antoine Vergote was born in Belgium in 1921. He is a professor at Louvain University and was a disciple of Jacques Lacan. A scholar in psychoanalysis, philosophy and theology, Vergote has devoted himself to the analysis of the religious phenomenon as it impacts modern man in the midst of his traumas and contradictions. He has written numerous books and has been particularly interested in the relationship between psychoanalysis, anthropology, and Christian faith. As a co-founder of the Belgian School of Psychoanalysis, he has attempted to refute those who view religion as a neurosis by showing that the tools of psychoanalysis can be used to elicit an experience of compassion and sensitivity capable of revealing truth and of giving meaning to human history as reflected in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
